The Huer’s Hut

The Huers Hut, on Towan Head, symbolizes Newquay’s commercial fishing past. Huers manned the building, employed by Fish Cellars companies. The current structure dates back to the mid 19th century, but a shelter existed since the 14th century. The Huer would watch for passing fish, including pilchards, using the distinctive ripple and color as signs of their presence.
