“Rising Costs Reshape UK Nightlife: Young Adults Embrace Nights In Over Nights Out”

NewquayClubbing23 | August 28, 2023

A significant proportion of young individuals in the United Kingdom are opting for fewer nights out due to the ongoing cost-of-living challenges, according to a recent survey conducted by Rekom, a prominent late-night operator in the UK.

The survey, which engaged 2,007 participants aged 18 and above, delved into the evolving attitudes towards nightlife since the autumn of 2022. The Night Index findings unveiled a noteworthy shift, with over one-third (34.9%) of respondents indicating reduced engagement in nightlife. Among those aged between 25 and 34 years, concerns about elevated rental expenses emerged as a predominant factor affecting nightlife for more than a fifth of individuals (21.19%).

Other contributory reasons for this altered behavior include heightened utility bills (43%) and the necessity to save any additional disposable income (33%). Notably, individuals in full-time employment revealed an average of 1.8 nights out weekly, compared to the 2.2 nights reported by employees.

Pricing continues to wield substantial influence in the decision-making process for young people considering a night out. This influence has risen by 6% compared to the previous Rekom Night Index from March 2023. Additionally, nearly 28% of respondents underscored the significance of inexpensive or free-entry club access, while 27% emphasized the importance of affordable drinks.

Rekom UK’s Chairman, Peter Marks, emphasized that the challenging economic landscape is causing young people to curtail their outings, opting for more budget-friendly socialization options. Marks highlighted that this shift could potentially impact the broader nighttime economy.

The implications of these changing spending patterns, coupled with rising operational costs, have dealt a severe blow to the late-night and clubbing sectors. The Night Time Industries Association disclosed a staggering 31% reduction in the number of nightclubs in the UK between June 2020 and June 2023. Independent nightclubs bore the brunt of this decline, experiencing a 35% closure rate since 2020.

Kate Hodgkinson, an independent venue owner, voiced that the dynamics of ticket purchasing have been notably transformed, paralleling the uncertainty brought about by the cost-of-living crisis. This shift has resulted in a reluctance to commit to advance ticket purchases due to prevailing uncertainties.

Russell Quelch, Rekom UK’s Executive Director, emphasized the necessity for the late-night sector to adapt and evolve in response to these evolving behaviors. Quelch highlighted the importance of strategic alignment and engaging with the market, particularly during these financially challenging times.
